Prachanda declares Maoist Centre will emerge as first party in 2027 local elections

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and Chair of the Maoist Centre, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has announced his party’s goal to become the leading force in the upcoming local elections.

Speaking at a vote of thanks and vigilance meeting in Teteriya, Gramthan Rural Municipality-5, Morang, on Saturday, Prachanda stated that the Maoist Centre aims to win more than 250 municipalities in the next elections, positioning it as the top party in the country.

Reflecting on the party’s recent successes, Prachanda highlighted the strategic importance of the Maoist Centre’s victories in the recent by-elections, where it secured two wards in Gramthan Rural Municipality and Udayapur, along with increased support in other areas.

“The results from the East have sent a strong message that the Maoist Centre is on the rise, contradicting claims by opponents that our party is losing ground,” he said.

Prachanda noted that in the 2022 local elections, the Maoist Centre had won mayor and chairperson positions in 122 municipalities. With the addition of Gramthan, the number has now increased to 123.

He expressed confidence that this momentum will continue, leading to victories in over 250 municipalities.

Acknowledging past setbacks, Prachanda admitted that alliances with parties like the Nepali Congress and UML had contributed to the party’s decline but affirmed that the Maoist Centre would now move forward independently.

“We will rely on our own strength and remain committed to solving the problems of the people,” he assured.

He also commended the people of Gramthan for their support, calling their trust a significant contribution to the Maoist Centre’s resurgence.

“This is not just a victory for one municipality but a victory of strategic importance that will resonate across the country,” said Prachanda.

The Maoist Centre is gearing up for the upcoming elections with renewed focus and determination, buoyed by recent successes that signal a potential resurgence for the party.
