Prachanda urges swift completion Girija Prasad Koirala Stadium

BIRATNAGAR: Chair of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ has called for the completion of the Girija Prasad Koirala International Cricket Stadium in Biratnagar.

Stating that the stadium is a national pride project, Dahal said the federal government needed to expedite its construction, highlighting its significance for sports and regional development.

While inspecting the stadium on Saturday, Dahal recalled that the initiative to rename the Jhapa Baijnath Stadium and elevate it as a national pride project was undertaken during his tenure as Prime Minister.

The project honors former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, a key figure in Nepal’s democratic and peace processes.

“This stadium represents the vision of a signatory of the Comprehensive Peace Accord and a leader instrumental in establishing the Federal Democratic Republic,” Dahal said. “It is crucial for the development of eastern Nepal and the national sports sector. I will fully support its completion as the leader of the main opposition party.”

He added that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) have been completed, as per the National Sports Council. Dahal urged the government to ensure budgetary provisions and expedite the remaining construction processes.

Dahal also highlighted a broader initiative to designate all provincial stadiums as national pride projects, reiterating the importance of prioritizing the Girija Prasad Koirala International Cricket Stadium.

“This multi-faceted project deserves special attention for its potential to contribute significantly to Nepal’s sports infrastructure and regional progress,” he said.
