KMC starts installing ‘dry riser system’ for fire safety

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated the installation of a dry riser system in narrow alleys that are inaccessible to fire engines during emergencies.

The effort, led by KMC’s Department of Disaster Management, aims to enhance fire safety in densely populated areas.

The dry riser system has already been installed in wards 6, 7, 9, 13, 17, 18, 21, 25, and 27, with plans to expand the technology to other wards as needed, according to Superintendent of Police Bishnu Prasad Joshi of KMC.

The system features outlets placed every 45-75 meters, connected to inlets at both ends.

During a fire, fire engines pump water into the inlets, which can then be accessed from the outlets to extinguish the flames.

Capable of generating water pressure of 8 bars, the system can supply water up to the seventh floor of a building, making it a vital tool for fire safety in Kathmandu’s congested urban spaces.
