KATHMANDU: Voting is underway at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu to elect the new leadership of the CPN-UML.
Delegates to the UML General Convention are casting their ballots using 80 voting machines. However, voters have reported that it takes up to half an hour for each person to vote despite the use of machines.
UML Central Election Commission Secretary Dr. Kunsang Lama said the Commission aims to begin counting votes at midnight after voting concludes.
“We estimate that voting will end by 8 pm tonight,” he said adding, “However, it may take an additional hour or two. Voting will conclude by 10 pm, and counting will begin once voting is completed.” He added that vote counting is expected to start by midnight.
Through the ongoing voting process, the party is electing one chairperson, five vice-chairpersons, one general secretary, three deputy general secretaries, and nine secretaries as office bearers for the 301-member Central Committee.
There are around 650 candidates contesting from two panels led by presidential contenders KP Sharma Oli and Ishwor Pokharel.
