The National Vigilance Centre is set to take a more active role in strengthening the government’s anti-corruption efforts. Prime Minister Sushila Karki, during a meeting with Centre Secretary Sarju Kumar Vaidya on Wednesday, instructed the office to reinforce its responsibilities and enhance its effectiveness.

Kathmandu defeats defending champions Janakpur in NPL season 2 opener

Kathmandu Gorkhas secured a five-wicket victory over defending champions Janakpur Bolts in the opening match of Nepal Premier League Season 2. After winning the toss and opting to bat second, Kathmandu successfully chased Janakpur’s target of 131 runs, completing the chase in 18 overs with five wickets in hand. Kathmandu posted 132 runs to begin their NPL Season 2 campaign with a convincing victory.

Foreign investment commitments plunge after Gen-Z protest

Nepal’s economy has begun to feel a serious and negative impact from the Gen-Z protest, with foreign investment commitments plunging sharply in the two months following the protests of September 8 and 9. Official data published by the Department of Industry shows that foreign investment pledges, which stood at Rs 8.98 billion in August, shrank dramatically to Rs 2.04 billion in September, and further collapsed to just Rs 1.54 billion in October. The figures reflect a steep and sustained drop compared to earlier months.

Supreme Court issues interim order to halt removal of five Madhesh Provincial Assembly members

The Supreme Court has issued a short-term interim order preventing the removal of five members of the Madhesh Provincial Assembly. The move follows the Provincial Assembly Speaker Ramchandra Mandal’s decision on November 13 to dismiss the five lawmakers, four from JSP-Nepal (Manishkumar Suman, Sanjaykumar Yadav, Singhasan Sah Kalwar, Sharda Shankar Sah Kalbanar) and one from NUPA (Urmila Singh), for being absent in over ten assembly sessions.

Commission upholds Energy Minister’s decision on dedicated and trunk line tariff

The Electricity Regulatory Commission has upheld the Nepal Electricity Authority’s (NEA) decision in the dispute over tariffs for “dedicated” and “trunk line” electricity supply, effectively siding with the NEA. The ruling comes amid pressure reportedly exerted by Energy Minister Kulman Ghising. After hearing complaints filed by Panchakanya Plastic Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Panchakanya Steel, the commission concluded that the NEA’s move to collect outstanding dues was valid and declined to issue an interim order in favor of the industries. Both companies had long resisted paying tariffs for dedicated and trunk line services provided by the NEA.

NRB to release remaining Rs 42 billion to government after adjusting reserves

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has said it will provide the remaining Rs 42 billion to the government after allocating the required amount across its designated reserves. In its clarification on Friday, the central bank stated that it has already transferred a significant portion of the government’s demand while maintaining the statutory and internal reserve requirements mandated by Nepal Rastra Bank Act.

Govt begins terminating long-pending contracts; 25 road contracts scrapped in Kathmandu

In a major move to end delays in public infrastructure projects, the government has begun terminating long-pending “sick contracts” that remained stalled for years despite formal agreements. Under the initiative of Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising, the Kathmandu Road Division Office on Monday issued a notice terminating 25 non-performing road contracts. These contracts date back to fiscal years 2010/11 to 2022/23, many of which had seen no progress for years.

CAN and Police ask public not to gather around TU Cricket Ground as NPL tickets sell out

Cricket Association of Nepal along with Nepal Police have requested the public not to crowd around the Tribhuvan University (TU) International Cricket Ground after all tickets for the opening day of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) were sold out. Issuing a notice, police said they were informed that all tickets for Friday’s matches had been fully sold, and urged those without tickets to avoid gathering near the venue.

Gold price rises by Rs 500 per tola in domestic market

The price of gold increased in the domestic market on Monday, rising by Rs 500 per tola compared to the previous trading day. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of fine gold has been fixed at Rs 243,300 per tola today.

Govt spending exceeds revenue by Rs 135 billion in four months

The government has spent Rs 468.88 billion in the first four months of the current fiscal year, surpassing its revenue of Rs 333.34 billion by Rs 135.54 billion, according to the Office of the Comptroller General. Revenue mobilization has remained low, with the government collecting only 21.72 percent of its annual target. Tax income reached 23.15 percent, non-tax revenue 12.73 percent, and grants 6.53 percent of the respective yearly goals.

Finance Minister assures private sector security after Gen-Z protests

Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has reiterated the government’s full commitment to safeguarding the private sector and strengthening security in the aftermath of the recent Gen-Z protests. Speaking at a programme organised by the Inland Revenue Department on the occasion of National Tax Day, he expressed concern over the disruption and damage caused to businesses.

Voter registration for March 5 election shows encouraging turnout

Voter registration for the upcoming March 5, 2026, election has shown an encouraging trend, following the introduction of National ID-based registration alongside the biometric system. The Election Commission reported that over 300,000 voters have registered through the biometric system so far, while registrations using the National ID have reached 225,000.

ANNFSU dismisses Sujan Kadariya, appoints Deepak Dhami as new chair

The All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU), the student wing close to the CPN-UML, has officially relieved Sujan Kadariya of his duties and appointed General Secretary Deepak Dhami as its new chair. A meeting of the organization held on Monday at Nepal Commerce Campus, Minbhawan, approved Kadariya’s resignation tendered during the Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9, when he had announced his departure from the organization through a Facebook post. The meeting was attended by UML leader and ANNFSU in-charge Kishor Bikram Malla.

UML ready to guarantee Oli will not become PM if House is restored: Adhikari

CPN-UML Standing Committee member Khadga Raj Adhikari has said the UML is prepared to formally guarantee that party chair KP Sharma Oli will not take the post of prime minister immediately if the House of Representatives is reinstated. Speaking to journalists at Janakpurdham Airport, Adhikari argued that reinstating the dissolved House and amending the constitution to allow a non-member of parliament to become prime minister for a short period is necessary to form what he called an impartial, trusted government.

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina sentenced to death for crimes against humanity

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been found guilty of three out of five charges of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka. The court, which livestreamed the verdict, ruled that Hasina was the chief planner behind killings that took place during the August 2024 student uprising. The tribunal also handed death sentences to former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, while former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, already in custody, had earlier confessed to his role as a co-accused.

The protests saw 76 casualties, including 17 deaths on September 8 alone, after security personnel opened fire near the Parliament building.

NEPSE rises by 9.78 points as turnover reaches Rs 3.94 billion

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index inched up by 9.78 points on Monday, closing at 2,550.36 points, backed by a turnover of Rs 3.94 billion. According to NEPSE, 167 companies recorded an increase in share prices, while 76 declined. Share prices of 13 companies remained unchanged.

Rastriya Swatantra Party registers for upcoming House of Representatives election

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has officially registered with the Election Commission for the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21. RSP, which was formed shortly before the 2022 elections, had secured 20 seats in the House of Representatives, becoming the fourth largest party at the time.
