Questions raised over Mayor, Deputy Mayor’s absence during Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: Questions were raised on Friday over Mayor Balen Shah and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol’s absence during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, during the 43rd Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Executive Meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Ward 11 Chair Hiralal Tandukar criticized the mayor and deputy mayor for not fulfilling their duties amid a major protest concentrated within the metropolitan area.

“It was a massive protest, and it was centered within our municipality. Where were the mayor and deputy mayor during the fires and unrest? What were their responsibilities?” Tandukar asked.

He added that while officials can issue statements or demands once the situation stabilizes, they should have demonstrated leadership during the crisis.

“Where were you two during the Jan-G protests on September 8 and 9?” he questioned Mayor Shah and Deputy Mayor Dangol during the meeting.

Tandukar also noted that despite continuing to show respect and trust toward Mayor Shah, he felt that the mayor failed to uphold that trust and the image expected of his office.

“We maintained our respect and trust, but the mayor could not preserve it. His actions did not match the confidence we placed in him,” Tandukar said.
