Nepal Telecom expanding services across Karnali

KARNALI: Nepal Telecom’s Karnali Provincial Directorate in Surkhet is actively working to expand communication services across Karnali Province, aiming to improve digital access in even the most remote areas.

Dr. Kamal Lamichhane, Director of the Provincial Directorate, stated that efforts are underway to expand 4G and fiber internet services throughout the province. So far, communication infrastructure has been extended to 37 municipalities.

“We are focused on strengthening network connectivity in rural areas and delivering services to remote settlements,” said Dr. Lamichhane. “A service survey is currently being conducted in an additional 50 municipalities. Once the Kohalpur–Surkhet 132 kV transmission line is connected, it will be much easier to expand fiber internet services.”

Preparations are also in progress to extend fiber connectivity to Chingad Rural Municipality in Surkhet. Dr. Lamichhane added that work is being prioritized in Dailekh, Kalikot, Jumla, and Sinja districts, where technicians are currently conducting door-to-door outreach.

Under a central plan, Base Transceiver Station (BTS) services have been launched in 10 new locations, including Upper Dolpa, Rukum Paschim, Jajarkot, and Lekhfarsa in Surkhet.

Dr. Lamichhane emphasized that expanding communication services depends heavily on reliable solar power systems and electrification. To that end, advance payments have already been made to the Nepal Electricity Authority for electrification at 30 new sites across the province.

According to the Directorate, market centers in 16 local levels in remote areas have already been reached, aligning with the vision of a “Digital Karnali Conclave.”

He also noted that work is underway in Mudkechula, Dolpa, through BTS infrastructure. If necessary, services will be provided via Ring Net. Additionally, 4G expansion is planned in and around Surkhet and is expected to reach Hilsa in Humla by the end of this year.
