Gen-Z protests: Rs 50 million cash and 18 kg gold looted from Rastriya Banijya Bank



KATHMANDU: During the Gen-Z protests on September 9, Rs 50 million in cash and 18 kilograms of gold were looted from the Baneshwor branch of Rastriya Banijya Bank, it has been revealed.

Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Prof. Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel disclosed the incident during a podcast with Sushant Pradhan. He said that while many government offices were damaged, Nepal Rastra Bank remained secure, but the state-owned Rastriya Banijya Bank suffered a major heist.

“There was one serious case of looting. From the Rastriya Banijya Bank located inside the Parliament building, about Rs 50 million in cash and nearly 18 kilograms of gold were stolen,” Governor Poudel stated in the podcast.

He further shared that, at the time of the protests, there was significant fear that ATMs could run out of cash and digital transactions might come to a halt, though such a situation did not occur.
