Wet Dashain likely as monsoon shows signs of late activity

KATHMANDU: Although the monsoon is typically expected to withdraw in the next 15 days, the system has shown renewed activity across Nepal, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) reported.

Meteorologists at the DHM noted that the monsoon’s low-pressure trough remains near its average position, while moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal have also contributed to increased rainfall activity.

“Normally, the monsoon withdraws around October 2. With roughly 15 days remaining, there are instances it can extend,” said Rojan Lamichhane, a senior meteorologist. “It is still too early to confirm whether the monsoon will retreat on schedule this year.”

According to Lamichhane, weather is expected to remain partly cloudy across the country today. Moderate rainfall is likely in some hilly areas of Bagmati and Lumbini provinces, with scattered showers elsewhere.

Heavy rainfall may occur in hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Karnali provinces, as well as select Terai areas of Lumbini Province.

The department has also warned that river water levels may rise in several areas. Vinod Parajuli, a flood expert at DHM, cautioned that smaller rivers in districts such as Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Palpa, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi East and West, Doti, Kailali, and neighboring areas could experience significant increases in flow, posing a moderate risk of flash floods.

“Residents in districts including Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Bara, Parsa, Chitwan, Kaski, Tanahun, Syangja, Myagdi, Baglung, Parbat, Gulmi, Arghakhanchi, Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Surkhet, Dailekh, Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Darchula, and nearby areas should remain vigilant, as smaller rivers may see rising water levels and a moderate risk of sudden flooding,” Parajuli said.

Authorities have urged local communities to take precautions and remain alert in riverine and flood-prone areas in the coming days.
