Preparations complete for HKH Parliamentarians’ Meet 2025

KATHMANDU: Final preparations have been completed for the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) Parliamentarians’ Meet 2025, scheduled to begin in Kathmandu on Monday.

The two-day event aims to foster dialogue, coordination, and shared understanding among parliamentarians from HKH region countries.

The event, supported technically by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), will bring together representatives from Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Afghanistan has not been invited, as Nepal has yet to recognize its current government.

President Ramchandra Paudel will attend as Chief Guest, while Speaker Devraj Ghimire will be the Special Guest. The inaugural session will begin at 9:30 AM on Monday, with the participation of the President, Speaker, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Forests and Environment, ICIMOD Director General Pema Gyamtsho, and dignitaries from participating countries.

Following the inauguration, multiple technical sessions will be held focusing on key issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, disaster risk, and environmental challenges across the HKH region.

Around 30 participants are expected, including parliamentarians, committee chairs, climate experts, and representatives from partner organizations, Nepal’s Federal Parliament, and relevant government agencies.

The event is being organized in coordination with the Ministry of Forests and Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Organizing Committee Coordinator Bir Bahadur Balayar confirmed that all arrangements are in place.

According to ICIMOD, the HKH region is facing severe climate-related threats, including ecosystem degradation and socio-economic disruption. The event underscores the crucial role of parliamentarians in shaping policy and legislation to promote regional resilience and climate action.
