RSP introduces candidate selection procedure for upcoming by-election

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has unveiled a new procedure for selecting candidates under the first-past-the-post electoral system for the House of Representatives.

According to the procedure, the selection will be based on leadership potential, political proximity, inclusivity, and votes received in the party’s internal preliminary elections.

At a press conference held at the party’s central office on Thursday, RSP Deputy General Secretary Bipin Acharya announced that the candidate for the upcoming by-election in Rupandehi-3, scheduled for November 3, will be selected using this new framework.

“Rupandehi will serve as a starting point for this selection method,” Acharya said. “The party will choose a candidate who is active in party affairs, preferred by members and office-bearers, and is capable of contributing meaningfully to the country and its people.”

Party spokesperson Manish Jha added that candidate acceptability, personality, and competence will be decisive factors. He noted that the party has been practicing preliminary internal elections for candidate selection since its inception, and that the newly published framework is a refined version of that process.

Under the new system, 25 percent of the evaluation will be based on leadership academy performance, 20 percent on political proximity, 5 percent on inclusivity, and 50 percent on results from the preliminary internal election. The party plans to release the timeline for the candidate selection process within a week.
