Heavy rainfall likely in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces

KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a bulletin detailing the expected rainfall across Nepal’s provinces for today.

According to the Meteorological Division, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected this afternoon at some locations throughout all provinces.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

Additionally, light rain or snowfall is likely at a few high hilly and mountainous areas in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as one or two places in other mountainous regions.

Tonight, the forecast indicates the continuation of light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning at some locations in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, with a few places in other provinces also likely to receive rain.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall may again be experienced at one or two places in Koshi, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.

Light rain or snowfall is expected in some high hilly and mountainous areas in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two locations in other mountainous regions.

Meteorologists explained the rainfall intensity categories, noting that light rain refers to less than 10 millimeters within 24 hours; moderate rain ranges from 10 to 50 millimeters; heavy rain is 50 to 100 millimeters; very heavy rain between 100 to 200 millimeters; and extremely heavy rain exceeds 200 millimeters.

They further clarified the terms used to describe the coverage of rainfall in a province. Rainfall at “one or two places” means less than 10 percent of the area is affected, while “a few places” indicates rainfall over 10 to 30 percent of the area.

“Some places” refers to 30 to 50 percent coverage, “many places” corresponds to 50 to 80 percent, and “most places” means more than 80 percent of the area is expected to receive rain.

Currently, the monsoon has spread to some parts of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as a few places in the eastern part of Lumbini Province.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country remains influenced by westerly and local winds, according to meteorologists.
