Floods and landslide disrupts daily life in Sabhapokhari

KATHMANDU: Local life in Sabhakhola, situated in Sabhapokhari Rural Municipality-4, has been severely affected following a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall on Thursday night.

The incident has brought transportation, electricity, and communication services to a complete halt.

According to Laxmi Chapagain, Vice-Chairperson of the rural municipality, the landslide and accompanying flood swept away road structures, electricity poles, and telephone lines in Wards No. 3, 4, and 6. “All services in the area have been suspended since Friday after the flood washed away the poles,” she said.

One of the most significant damages reported is to the 21-megawatt Sabha Pokhari Hydropower Project, which is currently under construction in Sabhapokhari-4. The flood washed away construction materials, adding uncertainty to the project’s timeline.

In addition to infrastructure damage, the flood has displaced at least half a dozen households in various wards. Vice-Chairperson Chapagain informed that the rural municipality has started gathering data on the number of people affected and the extent of property damage.

Authorities have yet to confirm if there are any casualties. Efforts are underway to restore essential services and support those displaced by the disaster.
