Sumana Shrestha resigns from party post

KATHMANDU: Sumana Shrestha, Joint General Secretary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has stepped down from her party position, citing the principle of “one person, one responsibility.”

Though Shrestha submitted her resignation to RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane on March 30, the development only came to light today.

According to her secretariat, the decision followed a detailed discussion with Lamichhane, during which she emphasized the importance of separating party and parliamentary duties, particularly as the younger generation pushes for internal reforms.

“She submitted her resignation letter stating that she would focus on parliamentary responsibilities and allow someone else to take over her party role,” said a statement from her secretariat. “The Speaker was also convinced of this principle.”

Lamichhane reportedly agreed with the idea of one person holding only one position, and the matter is expected to be formally discussed in the RSP’s central committee meeting scheduled for 2 pm today at the party’s central office in Banasthali.

Shrestha’s resignation letter is currently with Acting Chair DP Aryal.
