Kami Rita Sherpa set to climb Everest for record 31st time

KATHMANDU: Legendary Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa is once again preparing to scale Mount Everest — this time for a record-breaking 31st ascent.

The 55-year-old climber from Thame, Solukhumbu, already holds the world record for the most successful ascents of the world’s highest peak.

Kami Rita will be climbing with an Indian Army team this spring via Seven Summit Treks Pvt. Ltd. His last ascent — the 30th — was completed in 2024, further extending a record no other human has come close to matching in Everest’s 72-year climbing history.

Mingma Sherpa, chair of Seven Summit Treks, called Kami Rita’s achievement “a matter of national pride,” adding that his continued climbs are not only personal milestones but also symbols of Nepal’s mountaineering legacy.

With the 31st climb approaching, Kami Rita remains both a record-setter and a witness to the evolving face of Everest — a mountain he knows better than anyone.
