A Cabinet meeting held on Monday evening decided to appoint Thapa to the top police position, according to a minister.

Thapa becomes the 31st Inspector General of Nepal Police. He was competing for the post alongside Additional Inspector Generals (AIGs) Tek Bahadur Tamang and Sudip Giri. Before his appointment, Thapa was leading the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).

His competitors, Tamang and Giri, were serving as the chief of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari and the National Police Training Academy, respectively.
