Former King Gyanendra inciting public sentiment, claims Krishna Prasad Sitaula

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Krishna Sitaula has accused former King Gyanendra Shah of inciting public sentiment, saying that it is inappropriate for the ex-monarch to attempt public mobilization despite receiving a respectful farewell from the state.

Speaking during a special session of the National Assembly on Monday, Sitaula criticized the former king’s public appearances, claiming that Shah’s actions — such as addressing the public from a moving vehicle — are aimed at stirring unrest.

Sitaula insisted that Gyanendra Shah should respect the dignified exit accorded to him and avoid actions that provoke the people.

Sitaula recalled that during his tenure as Home Minister, he had personally negotiated the former king’s residence and security arrangements as the Prime Minister’s representative.

He said it would be more appropriate for the former monarch to openly declare himself as a political player rather than covertly inciting the public.

The NC leader also stressed the need for political unity among all parties to address such issues, emphasizing that the lack of political determination has persisted for too long. He urged for a comprehensive review of the constitution’s implementation, noting that all political parties have taken turns leading the government since its promulgation.

Sitaula further pointed out the need to assess whether the fundamental rights guaranteed by the new constitution are being effectively implemented and called for necessary amendments to better address the needs of the people.
