Within UML meeting: discussion over use of magnesium and sodium in burning Singha Durbar and Parliament

KATHMANDU: Questions were raised during a CPN‑UML central committee meeting about whether people inside the party are being used like “magnesium and sodium.” Central committee member Govinda Thapa asked the question on Thursday.

Thapa referred to a New York Times report that alleged organized groups used incendiary chemicals such as magnesium and sodium in the arson attacks that burned major buildings, including Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, and the Parliament, on September 9.

Warning that the same methods could be used against the UML, Thapa asked whether conspirators who used Gen‑Z as a front to burn state buildings might also aim to “burn” the UML. “Have we understood that conspirators who used Gen‑Z and incendiary chemicals to burn the country may also want to burn the UML and its chairman KP Oli?” he asked, adding that to destroy the party they would need to use people inside the party “as magnesium and sodium.”

Thapa urged those calling for Oli to step down to consider whether they themselves are being turned into instruments. “The enemy has already acted against us and set the country on fire. If the attacks of September 8 had not happened, I might have said the chairman could step down. But given what occurred on September 8-9, I say KP Oli cannot step down now. He can step down only after the country gets through this crisis.”
