Shekhar: Congress must give the country a new direction

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has called for a regular party convention in Mangsir (mid-November – mid-December) to revive and unify the party.

Speaking at the Congress Central Working Committee meeting in Sanepa on Thursday, Koirala stressed that the party’s 15th General Convention must be held this Mangsir (mid-November – mid-December).

“If we want to make Congress a party with a new direction and new possibilities, the General Convention must take place in Mangsir. I am confident that it will be so,” he said.
Referring to the Gen-Z Movement, he paid tribute to the young lives lost and the security personnel who died, emphasizing that the state must provide them proper support.

Koirala urged the government to take strict action against those responsible for the excessive use of force on September 9, which led to the loss of promising young lives. “Letting the guilty go free would be against justice and humanity,” he said.

He expressed concern over the growing political uncertainty in the country and the renewed instability in South Asia, stating that the constitution, built after seven decades of struggle, is currently in a semi-dormant state. “Where we stand to protect the constitution will determine the future direction,” he added.

Koirala outlined five conditions for ensuring a fair and safe election: controlling looted weapons, arresting escaped criminals, creating a fear-free society, taking legal action against those involved in destruction and theft, and establishing a conducive election environment.

He stressed that Congress must take leadership to elevate the country’s moral and political standing. “If democratic values are treated as matters of prestige rather than just winning or losing, democracy will be strengthened,” he said.

Koirala highlighted the need for party unity and proposed revoking previous disciplinary actions. “What we need now is a unified, strong, and timely adaptable Congress,” he said.

He further noted that Nepali Congress is synonymous with Nepal’s civilization, history, and democracy. Building consensus and ownership within the party will allow it to govern independently without relying on external support.
