KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has initiated efforts to address the problems faced by victims of cooperative fraud.
On Thursday, she held a discussion at Singha Durbar with Cooperative Minister Anil Sinha, Cooperative Secretary Kedarnath Sharma, Prime Minister’s Office Secretary Rajkumar Shrestha, the chair of the Crisis Management Committee, officials from the Cooperative Regulatory Authority, and representatives of the National Federation for the Protection of Cooperative Victims’ Deposits.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Karki said that those who have defrauded people through cooperatives must not be spared under any circumstances.
“Those who deceive and live lavishly must not go unpunished. They wear gold watches, ride expensive cars, and even fake divorces to evade the law. They must face consequences. If there are legal gaps, we’ll amend the laws,” she said firmly. “Let’s do whatever is necessary, but don’t let the fraudsters walk free. Let’s ensure victims no longer have to cry in the streets.”
She further stated, “We have to act now, this government must do it. Our main tasks are to conduct elections, take action against corruption, and resolve the cooperative crisis. That’s why this government exists.”
Prime Minister Karki emphasized that the assets of those involved in cooperative fraud, including houses and land, should be auctioned if necessary to return the savings to the victims.
