Floods devastate paddy crops worth Rs 50 million in Jhapa

JHAPA: Heavy floods triggered by incessant rainfall between October 4 and 6 have destroyed 463.42 hectares of paddy fields in Jhapa, causing significant losses to local farmers.

According to Sagar Bista, Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Office, approximately 1,644.33 metric tons of paddy, valued at Rs 57.523 million, were wiped out, affecting 703 farmers in the region.

“The flood has caused widespread damage to various crops, but the destruction of rice has been the most severe,” said Bista. “Farmers are facing severe hardship as the floods have washed away paddy that was close to ripening.”

The devastating floods, primarily in the Kankai and Biring rivers, have ravaged vast swathes of agricultural land, with Gauriganj, Bhadrapur, Kankai, Shivasatakshi, and Gauradaha municipalities suffering the most.

Bista highlighted that Jhapa Rural Municipality has been the hardest hit, particularly Wards 1, 2, and 3, where paddy, potatoes, and bananas worth approximately Rs 51.447 million have been lost. A total of 431 farmers from these areas have been severely impacted by the flooding.
