Election Commission begins preliminary preparations

KATHMANDU: Following the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the announcement of elections for March 5 (Falgun 21), the Election Commission has started preliminary preparations.

Earlier, the by-election schedule for Rupandehi Constituency No. 3, originally set for Kartik 17, was canceled, and preparations for the midterm elections have now begun.

Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that formal consultations with the government, along with other administrative preparations and planning, have commenced following the election announcement. Newly appointed Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal has announced that the budget will be adjusted to secure the funds required for the election.

The preparations follow the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in the wake of the Gen-Z protests on Bhadra 23–24. President Ramchandra Paudel appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Prime Minister on Bhadra 27.

On the same day, acting on the Prime Minister’s recommendation, the President dissolved the House of Representatives and announced elections for Falgun 21.
