Finance Ministry forms taskforce to manage funds for reconstruction and elections

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Finance has formed a three-member taskforce to identify sources of funding for reconstruction of structures damaged during the Gen-Z protests and for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

The taskforce includes Budget and Program Division Chief Suman Dahal, Foreign Aid Coordination Division Chief Dhaniram Sharma, and Revenue Management Division Chief Uttarkumar Khatri.

According to Finance Ministry Spokesperson Tanka Prasad Pandey, the team will study how resources can be mobilized within the existing budget by cutting or reprioritizing certain plans and programs.

“A budget is required for elections and reconstruction. The taskforce will explore potential areas within the current budget framework to manage resources,” Pandey said, adding that the team also has the authority to recommend priority cuts in projects.

On Monday, newly appointed Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal had announced that politically motivated, poorly prepared, and fragmented programs included in the FY 2082/83 budget would be scrapped.

Khanal further clarified that the government will not introduce a supplementary budget. Instead, around Rs 100 billion needed for reconstruction and elections could be secured through cuts in existing allocations.
