KATHMANDU: Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel has lauded Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital for its historic role in improving maternal and child health in Nepal.
Speaking at the hospital’s 66th anniversary, Minister Paudel highlighted pioneering initiatives such as neonatal screening, the human milk bank, and the reinstated IVF services, calling them exemplary for the national health system.
He also announced plans to expand the hospital by adding 11 beds to reach a total of 500 and to establish two 25-bed satellite maternity hospitals in Kathmandu to manage the growing demand.
“Paropakar Maternity Hospital is not just a hospital—it is a national heritage connecting the lives of millions of mothers and children. Its 66-year journey reflects the development of Nepal’s health sector,” said Minister Paudel.
“The reinstated IVF services and programs like neonatal screening and milk banking will play a pivotal role in reducing infant mortality and implementing the government’s new infertility treatment standards.”
Hospital Director Shriprasad Adhikari shared recent achievements, including advanced gynecological surgeries using laparoscopic technology, mental health outpatient services for pregnant women, and fetal and maternal echocardiography, which have helped reduce referral rates.
The hospital also prioritizes social responsibility, offering one-stop crisis management for survivors of gender-based violence, post-air rescue care for women in remote areas under the President’s Women Upliftment Program, and free treatment for the poor through the Social Security Unit.
Established in 2016 BS with 40 beds, the hospital now operates 489 beds. Its annual report showed that over 21,000 successful deliveries took place in the last fiscal year, and more than 233,000 patients received services from the outpatient department.
