Shri Krishna Janmastami being observed today

KATHMANDU: Hindus across the country are celebrating Shri Krishna Janmastami today with deep devotion and reverence, marking the birth of Lord Krishna through various religious programs and rituals.

According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna was born at midnight on Bhadrakrishna Ashtami during the Dwapar Yuga, as per the lunar calendar. He is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe, who appeared to vanquish evil, injustice, and malevolent forces.

Revered as the embodiment of wisdom, action, and devotion, Lord Krishna is known for his teachings on Gyanayog (the path of knowledge), Karmayog (the path of action), and Bhaktiyog (the path of devotion)—principles that continue to inspire millions.

Janmastami is celebrated grandly to honor Lord Krishna’s divine deeds and his message of righteousness and spiritual liberation. As per legend, he was born to Basudev and Devaki while they were imprisoned by the tyrant Kansa in Mathura.

His life and teachings are believed to have guided humanity toward truth, compassion, and immortality.

Lord Krishna is affectionately known as “Gopal” for his role as a cowherd and “Manmohan” for the mesmerizing tunes of his flute.

Devotees gather at temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, including the historic Shri Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur, which was constructed entirely of stone by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla of Patan.

Religious organizations and communities mark the occasion with vibrant processions featuring idols and portraits of Lord Krishna. Devotees, particularly women, observe the night in worship—chanting hymns, singing devotional songs, dancing, and lighting traditional oil lamps in celebration of the divine birth.
