Resignation of Lumbini province MP Gurung not accepted

KATHMANDU: The resignation of Gita Gurung, a proportional representative member of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly from the Janamat Party, has not been accepted.

Gurung, who currently resides in the United Kingdom, had recently submitted a handwritten resignation letter to the Provincial Assembly Secretariat via email.

However, the Secretariat declined to accept the resignation, citing procedural shortcomings.

Speaker Tularam Gharti Magar stated that Gurung must appear in person to verify her identity for the resignation to be considered valid.

As a result, her resignation has been put on hold, and she is required to travel to Lumbini if she wishes to officially vacate her seat.

While the Dr. CK Raut-led Janamat Party has also pushed for her resignation to be accepted, the Speaker emphasized that unless Gurung presents herself in person, the resignation cannot be processed.

Alternatively, the party must submit a formal decision regarding disciplinary action against her.

It has also been reported that the resignation letter was not submitted through an official email address, and her signature could not be authenticated, further complicating the matter.
