KATHMANDU: The Nepali New Year has brought a wave of excitement to the domestic film industry, with packed cinema halls and enthusiastic audiences flocking to watch newly released films such as Pitambar, Anjila, Basanta, and Karma.

According to filmmakers, audience turnout has been encouraging, especially in the Kathmandu Valley. Director Krisha Chaulagain reported that her film Pitambar received full-house screenings on New Year’s Day.

“We visited several halls in the Valley and received positive feedback from the audience. Many said they didn’t expect such a film could be made in Nepal,” she said, expressing confidence in the film’s commercial prospects.

Pitamber, described as a multi-starrer, features a notable cast including Saugat Malla, Dayahang Rai, Pradeep Khadka, Anup Bikram Shahi, Aryan Sigdel, Divya Dev Pant, Pramod Agrahari, Divya Rayamajhi, Supushpa Bhatta, Suraksha Pant, and Gaurav Bista.

According to Chaulagain, every actor was cast according to the story’s needs, ensuring that no role felt forced. The film has grossed Rs 18.6 million at the Central Management Ticket System (box office) under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Another film, Karma, directed by Saurabh Chaudhary, has also drawn a strong audience. The conflict-themed movie stars Bipin Karki, Divya Dev Pant, Mukun Bhusal, and Upasana Singh Thakuri.

Similarly, Basant, written, directed, and acted by Prakash Saput, and Anjila, based on the life of Nepali women’s national football team captain and goalkeeper Angela Tumbapo Subba, have seen enthusiastic viewer responses. Anjila, now in its fifth week, has grossed Rs 17.7 million.

Director Milan Chams expressed gratitude for the sustained audience support for Anjila. The biopic also features Dayahang Rai, Sirjana Subba, and Maotse Gurung.
