Meeting of high-level political mechanism taking place today

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has scheduled a meeting of the high-level political mechanism for Wednesday.

The decision followed a discussion between Oli, who leads the CPN-UML, and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

The meeting is likely to be held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, either in the afternoon or evening. Political leaders have indicated that both Oli and Deuba are expected to attend.

As one mechanism member explained, the session might begin with only the mechanism’s members and later include top party leaders, or everyone might convene from the outset.

The meeting will focus on recent political developments, the government’s trajectory, and key appointment decisions.

Earlier the same day, the Council of Ministers also met in Baluwatar.

Amid mounting criticism from Congress leaders—such as General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, along with Shekhar Koirala and SP Saud—about the government’s sluggish performance, Oli has initiated a series of meetings in response.

The high-level political mechanism comprises senior vice-chair Ishwar Pokhrel, Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel, and the Prime Minister’s Chief Political Advisor Bishnu Rimal from the UML side. Representing the Congress are Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka, Gagan Thapa, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Foreign Minister Arzu Rana.
