Prachanda opposes arrest over photo burning, says protests are part of democracy



KATHMANDU:  CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stated that protests are a fundamental right in a democracy and that arresting individuals for burning photos is inappropriate.

His remarks come after police arrested Nirajan Bam, secretary of the Rastriya Prajatantrik Yuwa Sangathan, from Chitwan on Sunday for allegedly burning Prachanda’s photograph.

Bam had set fire to the image during a Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) event in Hetauda on Saturday while chanting slogans against the republic.

RPP central leader and Member of Parliament Deepak Bahadur Singh was also present at the event.

Following Bam’s detention, Prachanda took to social media on Sunday evening, stating, “There are various forms of protest in a democracy. Arresting someone for burning a photo is not justified.”
