KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has expressed opposition to the idea of using an ordinance to split any political party, stating that such actions are not part of his agenda.
He reminded lawmakers that an ordinance issued by the previous government under Sher Bahadur Deuba had resulted in the splitting of the CPN-UML.
PM Oli also accused opposition parties of spreading confusion by bringing forward an ordinance targeting the public during the current government’s question-and-answer session in Parliament on Sunday.
When Barshaman Pun, a lawmaker from the main opposition party, Maoist Center, opposed the ordinance during the session, Prime Minister Oli reminded him that the UML had been split by an ordinance in 2078 BS.
Oli emphasized that it was not his responsibility to split or unite any party. He made it clear that he would not engage in the “petty game” of party split.
“Didn’t they issue the ordinance to split my own party?” he said. “Before bringing the ordinance, I heard many rumors that it was intended to split the party. It is not my job to split or unite anyone’s party. Such petty issues are not on my agenda.”
After Maoist Deputy General Secretary Pun strongly opposed the ordinance while questioning Prime Minister Oli, Oli urged him to remember May 3, 2023.
PM Oli recalled that the ordinance was brought four days before the parliament session began on May 2, 2023, and urged Pun to recall that fact.
“I urge you to remember that day. At that time, the ordinance was brought four days before the parliament session began,” Oli said.
“If it is said that only the government, including you, had the authority to bring the ordinance, then that is a different matter.”
