Police arrest suspect in assault on advocate Dinesh Tripathi

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested Lalit KC, 46, in connection with the assault on senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi.

The incident occurred on Wednesday outside the Kathmandu District Court after Tripathi had defended the complainant in the cooperative fraud case involving Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane.

KC was taken into custody from Babarmahal, and his remand has been extended by the court for further investigation.

Kathmandu Police Range Spokesperson SP Nawaraj Adhikari confirmed the arrest and mentioned that the investigation into KC’s affiliations is ongoing.

“We have taken one person into custody for investigation, and the remand has been extended. The investigation is progressing, and the details will be revealed once the file is prepared,” said Adhikari.

The assault took place as Tripathi was leaving the court after presenting arguments in a case related to over Rs 1 billion rupees in savings fraud at the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative Society in Kalimati.

A group of individuals, reportedly supporters of Lamichhane, attacked Tripathi, accusing him of defending the victim in the case. Tripathi has claimed that the assailants were RSP cadres, who also made derogatory comments about his role in the case, saying, “You are not the one who will fight the case against Rabi Dai and send him to jail.”

While Tripathi has identified his attackers as RSP supporters, the police have yet to confirm KC’s connection to the party.

The investigation is still ongoing, and police have stated they will release further details once the inquiry is complete.
