Oli camp decides to retain Shankar Pokharel as UML General Secretary amid internal dissent

KATHMANDU: The KP Sharma Oli-led faction of CPN-UML has decided to retain incumbent General Secretary Shankar Pokharel for another term at the party’s 11th National Convention.

The decision came after a two-day factional meeting held at Gundu, where Oli and his close aides agreed to continue Pokharel in the top administrative post.

However, the announcement triggered immediate dissent from Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, who had also staked a claim for the General Secretary position. Gyawali, along with Prithvi Subba Gurung, had expressed strong interest in the post. Following the decision to reinstate Pokharel, Gyawali walked out of the meeting, declaring he would no longer contest any post in the convention.

Oli, nevertheless, is reportedly making efforts to convince Gyawali to accept the Vice-Chair position by Tuesday. Prithvi Subba Gurung is also being considered for a Vice-Chair role as part of the party’s internal negotiations.
