KATHMANDU: The number of new voters in Nepal has seen a significant rise after the Election Commission allowed the use of the National Identity Card (NID) for registering in the voter list.
The provision, effective from October 14, enables citizens to provide their biometric details, photo and fingerprint, using the NID at registration centers, helping manage the increasing crowds at offices across the country.
The Election Commission has been updating and compiling the voter list in preparation for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
According to Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, by 9:00 pm on October 14, a total of 80,456 new voters had been added using NIDs, comprising 50,217 men, 30,235 women, and four identifying as other.
With this addition, the total number of new voters registered since the election announcement has reached 281,129. The Commission continues to accept registrations and update the voter list.
