Government forms judicial commission to investigate Gen-Z protest incidents

KATHMANDU: The interim government has decided to form a high-level judicial commission to investigate incidents and damages that occurred during the recent Gen-Z protests.

Home Minister Omprakash Aryal said the decision was made during the first cabinet meeting of the interim government held at Singha Durbar on Monday. The commission will examine cases of excesses and losses of property and life during the protests.

“The committee will be led by a former chief justice or senior judge, and further action will be based on its findings,” Aryal added.

The cabinet also decided to declare those who lost their lives during the protests as martyrs. In observance of national mourning, September 17 (Asoj 1) has been declared a public holiday. Families of the deceased will receive a total of Rs 1.5 million each, including Rs 1 million as assistance and Rs 500,000 for other expenses. All martyrs will be given state honors during their funerals.

Additionally, the government has approved the construction of the “Gen-Z Awakening Memorial Park” to commemorate the victims. Proposals submitted in the previous cabinet meeting will be returned for reconsideration.
