Pokharel appeals to UML cadres to reconstruct offices destroyed in protests

LALITPUR: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel on Monday visited the party’s central office in Chyasal, Lalitpur, for the first time since last week’s Gen-Z protests left the premises badly damaged.

Addressing party cadres during his visit, Pokharel appealed to UML members nationwide to begin reconstruction of offices and structures destroyed during the demonstrations. He also instructed leaders and activists to coordinate with government agencies to contribute to rebuilding public infrastructure affected by the unrest.

Pokharel announced that the party will observe Constitution Day on September 19 at the central office courtyard, symbolically marking the day from the ashes. He directed all UML district committees to organize similar programs across the country.

“The Constitution we achieved through a long struggle in 2015 must be celebrated even amidst destruction,” Pokharel said. “Decisions cannot always be made from the streets, achievements need to be institutionalized through the Constitution.”

Pokharel further stated that UML will support the interim government in its initiatives to curb corruption and promote good governance. He expressed confidence that the administration’s primary task would be ensuring security and holding timely elections.

“All democratic parties must now go among the people and seek fresh mandates,” he noted.

The UML headquarters, along with several district offices, was among many political and government facilities damaged in the September 8 and 9 protests led by the Gen-Z movement, which toppled the Oli-led government and paved the way for the formation of an interim administration under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki.
