Small businesses and liquor shops in Thamel asked to close by 10 pm

KATHMANDU: The Thamel Tourism Development Council has decided that liquor shops, pushcarts, and small roadside businesses in Thamel will only be allowed to operate until 10 pm, citing rising security concerns in the area.

Acting General Secretary of the Council, Punyaram Lageju, said the decision was made following a surge in thefts, robberies, and crowd-related disturbances during late-night hours.

“Small businesses and liquor shops have contributed to overcrowding in the streets. With unwanted activities increasing in recent days, we were compelled to impose an earlier closing time,” he said.

Lageju added that growing instances of quarrels and late-night noise have made it necessary to strengthen security in the area.

Nightlife entrepreneurs have voiced concern, however, saying the restrictions are hurting larger, higher-taxpaying businesses. “Twenty-four-hour liquor shops directly affect investment-heavy nightlife venues. Customers often consume alcohol cheaply on the streets and do not come to hotels or restaurants as expected,” said one business operator.

They also pointed out that smaller businesses and larger venues face different tax obligations, and urged the government to create a regulated system that balances both interests.

With tourist season beginning, stakeholders stressed the importance of maintaining Thamel’s image as a safe and peaceful destination. Critics argue that unregulated small businesses are contributing to theft and robberies, which risk damaging the area’s reputation.
