KANCHANPUR: A special campaign to demolish Chhaugoths—isolated huts where menstruating women are traditionally forced to stay—is being launched across all nine local levels of Kanchanpur district in Nepal.
The District Administration Office has formally directed the local governments to initiate demolition efforts.
“A campaign has been launched to eliminate the traditional practice by taking necessary decisions at the municipal level and implementing them accordingly,” states a letter signed by Chief District Officer Laxman Dhakal. The letter urges local levels to take active steps to end this harmful social custom.
The move comes after the recent death of 28-year-old Kamala Damai, who was staying in a Chhaugoth during her menstruation. She died from a snakebite three days ago in Krishnapur Municipality-1, Nigali Tole.
In response, the District Administration Office has ordered an immediate and coordinated campaign to dismantle such structures in an effort to prevent further tragedies and eliminate this discriminatory practice.
