UNITED KINGDOM: Former British Gurkha Captain Bhim Saru Magar, a British citizen of Nepali origin, has been elected as the Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough in the United Kingdom.

Captain Saru, a councillor from the ruling Labour Party, was elected mayor during the Borough Council’s annual meeting held today. He secured 20 votes, defeating his rival Will Markham, who received 15.

Of the total council members, 19 belong to the Labour Party, 17 to the Conservative Party, and two to the Green Party. Four councillors were absent during the vote.

Following his election, Mayor Saru was sworn in during the council’s plenary meeting. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude to the council and the residents of the borough for entrusting a person born in rural Nepal with the opportunity to serve as mayor in the UK.

“I am deeply honored to serve in this role,” said Saru. “As someone who followed in my father’s footsteps to join the British Army, being elected mayor is a proud and emotional moment. I will strive to unite all communities in the borough and make council services more efficient and inclusive.”

Speaking to RSS shortly after his oath, Mayor Saru said that his election was not just a personal achievement but a moment of pride for all Nepalis.

“Nepalis are now contributing in leadership roles across the globe. I look forward to sharing my experiences with Nepal, especially with mayors and local leaders there.”

He added, “My primary responsibility is to work for the development and welfare of the borough’s residents. There is also a sizeable Nepali community here, and I believe my leadership can make their lives a little easier.”

Saru also noted the historical significance of his election, pointing out that this is the first time in the more than 200-year history of Gurkha recruitment in Britain that someone from Nepal’s Gurkha community has become a mayor.

Who is Saru?

Bhim Saru Magar was born in Chidipani, Palpa, Nepal. His life journey reflects dedication and perseverance. He joined the British Army in 1993 and served nearly three decades in the Royal Engineers, retiring as a Garrison Engineer. After retirement, he ventured into business and established Saru Embroidery in the UK.

Last year, Saru was elected as a councillor from the Labour Party in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough. With additional backing from the Green Party, he has now ascended to the mayoral position—an inspiring milestone for the Nepali diaspora.

His transformation from Gurkha soldier to entrepreneur to public servant exemplifies the power of hard work and commitment in achieving success abroad.

Nuneaton and Bedworth is home to a vibrant Nepali and Gurkha community of over 3,000 people. The borough also features a unique Gurkha memorial located near Bramcote Barracks, underscoring its deep historical ties with the Gurkha regiment.
