SAARC-level cancer conference begins in Birtamode

KATHMANDU: Around 350 oncologists from seven South Asian countries have gathered in Birtamode for the ‘Purbanchal Cancer Conference-2025’, which kicked off on Friday.

Inaugurating the event, Prof Dr Madan Kumar Piya, founding president of the SAARC Federation of Oncologists Nepal, emphasized the role of new technology and public awareness in cancer treatment and prevention.

He highlighted that cancer can affect all parts of the human body except nails and hair and urged the media to promote the message that cancer is a conquerable disease.

Conference chair and Principal of B&C Medical College, Prof Dr Umesh Sharma, described cancer as a growing global health challenge and expressed hope that the conference would contribute to improving treatment methods.

The event will focus on emerging trends in breast and gastrointestinal cancers, with medical experts sharing experiences and discussing new treatment technologies, said Dr Birendra Yadav, Medical Director of Purbanchal Cancer Hospital. The hospital organizes an international cancer conference every two years.

Over 100 oncologists will present research papers during the three-day event, while cancer survivors will share their treatment experiences, according to Pramish Giri, the conference’s public relations officer.

Statistics from Purbanchal Cancer Hospital show a rising number of breast and lung cancer cases in Nepal.

Over the past five years, the hospital recorded 814 breast cancer cases and 805 lung cancer cases, making them the most common types. Cervical cancer and ENT (ear, nose, and throat) cancers ranked third and fourth, respectively.
