PM highlights importance of effective earthquake preparedness

KIRTIPUR: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed the need for effective preparedness from all sectors to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters such as earthquakes.

Speaking at the 27th National Earthquake Safety Day event organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority in Kirtipur, the Prime Minister stated that the integrated settlements rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake have comparatively better safety measures.

He noted the importance of ensuring that such settlements also offer opportunities for employment and income generation and stressed the need for reevaluating strategies to address these concerns in the future.

Acknowledging that earthquakes cannot be prevented, PM Oli underscored the importance of constructing earthquake-resistant houses and structures to minimize damage. He further highlighted January as a month for commemorating earthquake safety and remembering the sacrifices made during Nepal’s struggle for democracy.

“Post-2015 earthquake reconstruction has brought significant achievements. Building on these lessons, we must focus on developing well-planned settlements and enhancing preparedness for future disasters. The government will lead these efforts in consultation with experts,” he said.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal, and Member of Parliament Rajendra KC, among others.
