Socialist Front meeting begins with key political figures in attendance

KATHMANDU: The Socialist Front, an alliance of left-leaning parties initiated by the Maoist Center, has resumed its activities with a meeting held at the central office of Unified Socialist in Aloknagar.

The meeting is focused on reactivating the front, which includes four parties from both inside and outside the federal parliament.

Key figures in attendance include Unified Socialist Chair Madhav Kumar Nepal, Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepal Communist Party General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand, and Nepal Samajwadi  Party Chair Mahendra Raya Yadav.

This meeting follows a decision made by the working group of the Socialist Front on Tuesday, which proposed several new programs for the alliance. The current meeting is expected to approve these plans.

This marks the first gathering of the Socialist Front since Dahal’s removal from power on July 12, 2024. After a failed unity effort with Unified Socialist and former Maoist members, Dahal has returned to the front, seeking to consolidate opposition against the government.

Earlier this week, Dahal and Madhav Nepal met at Singha Durbar, where they agreed on the need to revive the Socialist Front and move forward with its agenda.

Dahal’s strategy is to activate the front in response to growing dissatisfaction with the KP Sharma Oli-led government and the Nepali Congress.

The Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, led by Upendra Yadav, was initially part of the front, but Yadav left after the party split last May, accusing Dahal of causing the division. Although Dahal and Nepal have discussed bringing Yadav back into the front, Yadav has indicated he will not join immediately.

The Socialist Front, initially formed on June 19, 2023, by the Maoist Center, Unified Socialists, Janata Samajwadi Party (Nepal), and the Biplav-led CPN, had been dormant since Dahal’s removal from power.

After a six-month hiatus, Dahal is now working to revive the alliance and move forward with its political agenda.
