Opposition parties condemn govt’s decision to rule through ordinances

KATHMANDU: Six opposition parties, including the main opposition Maoist Center, have expressed strong disapproval of the government’s decision to govern through ordinances without calling a regular winter session.

A meeting of opposition parties held at the Maoist Center’s parliamentary party office on Wednesday morning concluded that the government’s reliance on ordinances instead of convening a winter session was an arbitrary act.

“Four ordinances have recently been issued instead of calling a regular winter session. There are reports that another ordinance has reached the President’s Office,” said Maoist Center Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun. “The government’s actions are inappropriate and have become arbitrary.”

Pun also revealed that the opposition parties have agreed to prepare for a special session if the government continues to bypass parliament.

“If the government continues to deceive the parliament, we are preparing to demand a special session on behalf of the opposition parties,” he said. “We have reached an understanding to make preparations.”

While only six opposition parties attended the meeting, Pun noted that other opposition parties had expressed support and planned to join the next gathering.

“They were unable to attend for various reasons, but they have indicated that they will participate in the upcoming meeting.”
