Birgunj Metropolitan City clears encroachments from BP Park

PARSA: Birgunj Metropolitan City has removed businesses operating illegally on BP Park near Ghantaghar Chowk as part of a campaign to reorganize public spaces in the city.

Metropolitan Mayor Rajesh Man Singh said the action was taken to clear fruit, vegetable and other temporary shops that had encroached on the park area, making it disorganised. “We began removing the unplanned market this morning using excavators. Traders who had been operating here are clearing their structures,” Mayor Singh said.

More than 250 vendors had been running businesses from temporary sheds, including vegetable, fruit and clothing stalls, as well as food shops. Mayor Singh said the metropolis now plans to develop the area into a well-managed, green and attractive park at an estimated cost of around Rs 700 million.

He added that alternative infrastructure has been arranged along the railway road in Chhapakaiya for those displaced by the clearance drive. The evacuation operation has been ongoing since morning with a heavy deployment of municipal police, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force to maintain order.
