HoR election: 81 days to go as EC gears up for polls

KATHMANDU: With just 81 days remaining until the House of Representatives election, the Election Commission (EC) is intensifying preparations. The Election Commission has completed the registration of political parties for both the first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR) systems.

The government has also made necessary arrangements to facilitate the electoral process, while political parties are ramping up their campaigns nationwide, creating a growing sense of an impending election atmosphere. Both major and emerging parties have launched election-focused activities across the country.

The EC has begun calculating proportional representation percentages based on population for the upcoming elections scheduled for March 5, covering groups such as Dalit, Indigenous, Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim communities, in accordance with constituency provisions.

A total of 100 political parties are expected to participate under the proportional representation system. These parties were registered and assigned election symbols by the EC last Friday.

Of the 100 parties, only 93 unique election symbols were established, as multiple parties applied for the same symbol. Meanwhile, 114 parties are set to contest the direct elections. The EC is also drafting the election code of conduct and is seeking feedback from stakeholders.
