UML holding Central Committee meeting at Bhrikutimandap ahead of closed session

KAHTMANDU: The CPN–UML is holding its final meeting of the current Central Committee this morning (Sunday) ahead of the closed session of the party’s 11th General Convention.

According to UML central committee member Bishnu Rijal, the meeting will take place at Bhrikutimandap at 9 am, the same venue where the closed session will be held. “Preparations are under way to begin the closed session at 12:15 pm after the central committee meeting,” Rijal said.

Earlier, the party had announced plans to start the closed session at 8 am. However, Rijal said the schedule was revised after it was decided to convene a central committee meeting beforehand. He added that details of the meeting agenda have not yet been disclosed.

Ahead of the convention’s inauguration, Chair KP Sharma Oli had proposed amending the party statute during a UML secretariat meeting held on Friday evening.

The proposal, which sought to manage leadership aspirations by increasing the number of office bearers and central committee members, was blocked following objections from Senior Vice Chair Ishwor Pokharel and his faction, forcing Oli to withdraw the proposal.

It is expected that today’s central committee meeting may revisit the issue. Meanwhile, the Pokharel faction has also raised objections to the list of 108 nominated general convention representatives recently made public by the party.
