Nepali Congress halts central committee meeting, calls executive committee session

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has paused its ongoing Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting to convene a session of the Executive Committee, party sources said.

The meeting was called by Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, who is seeking a resolution to the ongoing dispute over the party’s general convention schedule.

The Executive Committee meeting is scheduled for Friday at 1 pm in Dhobighat, Lalitpur, with the primary agenda focused on concluding the disagreement over the general convention dates.

Within the party, the establishment faction supports holding the general convention only after the elections on March 5, 2026, while the faction led by Dr. Shekhar Koirala advocates for a convention before the elections, or a special convention if the general convention cannot be held.

The dispute has persisted despite a CWC meeting that began on October 14, which failed to reach a consensus. Party General Secretary Gagan Thapa recently proposed holding a special convention from December 31 to January 3, while Co-General Secretary Mahendra Yadav suggested May 10 to 13 as an alternative.

The Executive Committee session follows a submission of signatures from 54 percent of representatives supporting a special convention, underscoring the urgency to resolve the issue.
