Gen-Z demands two-year term for directly elected executive

The Gen-Z Movement Alliance, the Council of Gen-Z, seven provincial coordinators, and the Gen-Z Front have submitted an agreement outlining various demands to Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki. They presented the “Proposed Agreement for the People’s Movement led by Gen-Z” to Prime Minister Karki on Friday evening. The document includes an 11-point agreement, with point 5 detailing the reforms they seek in Nepal’s constitution. The proposal calls for a nationwide citizen-wide discussion on adopting either a directly elected executive national president or a republican governance system.

EC calls for registration of parties wishing to participate in HoR and NA elections

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has called on political parties wishing to participate in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) and National Assembly (NA) elections to register. In a notice issued today, the Commission announced that party registration will be open from November 17 to 26 for participation in the HoR elections and from November 17 to 23 for participation in the NA elections. The notice states: “We request parties wishing to participate in the election to submit an application to the Commission along with a copy of the decision made by the party’s central committee, the annual audit report, and other necessary documents.”

A 5-point agreement has been reached between the Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti), Pragatisheel Rastriya Abhiyan, and Santosh Pariyar, who resigned from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) today (Friday). Dr. Baburam Bhattarai of Naya Shakti, Pragatisheel Rastriya Abhiyan leader Janardan Sharma, and other leaders participated in the signing ceremony. “Against the backdrop of the Gen-Z movement and the country’s severe economic and political crises—marked by corruption, nepotism, unemployment, and widespread inefficiencies in political parties—an agreement has been reached among the Nepal Samajwadi Party, Pragatisheel Rastriya Abhiyan, and outgoing House of Representatives member Santosh Pariyar,” the statement said.

PM Karki urges officials to enhance performance amid growing public expectations

Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has directed government officials to enhance their performance, stating that the current pace of work is insufficient to meet public expectations. Speaking at a review meeting on the implementation of policies, programs, and the budget for the current fiscal year at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Friday, PM Karki emphasized the need to improve operational methods in line with the country’s recent political changes and the aspirations of the Gen-Z generation. “The main reasons behind public frustration are widespread corruption and delays in the country’s development progress,” the Prime Minister’s Secretariat quoted her as saying.

Govt approves Rs 5 billion budget for HoR elections

The government has approved a budget of Rs 5 billion for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Bhattarai said that the Ministry of Finance has approved Rs 4.96 billion out of the Commission’s total request of Rs 7.5 billion. “Resources have been ensured for the elections,” Bhattarai said adding that the government will provide additional funds if needed, noting that Rs 5 billion has been approved for now.

Santosh Pariyar and Manushi in talks with Janardan’s team to form new party

Santosh Pariyar, who recently left the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has begun discussions with leader Janardan Sharma, who departed from the Maoist Centre and launched the Progressive National Campaign. In a café in Lalitpur, Sharma, Ram Karki, Sudan Kirati, and Manushi Bhattarai of Naya Shakti Nepal held talks on forming a new political party. A short while after the meeting started, former RSP chief whip Pariyar also joined the discussions. Following this, it has become almost certain that he will align himself with Janardan’s campaign.

Govt categorizes Gen-Z protest injuries into four types

The government has classified injuries sustained during the Gen-Z protests into four categories: critical, severe, moderate, and minor, officials said. Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, stated that a 10-member technical committee, chaired by Dr. Saroj Sharma, head of the Ministry’s Quality, Measurement, and Regulation Department, carried out the classification based on the nature and severity of injuries. According to the ministry, 23 individuals were categorized as critically injured, 21 as severely injured, 23 as moderately injured, and 11 as minor cases. All classified individuals will be issued identification cards reflecting their injury type.

Deuba couple arrives in Kathmandu after treatment in Singapore

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, have returned to Kathmandu after completing their treatment in Singapore. The couple arrived on Friday night. Deuba and his wife had faced an attack during the Gen-Z protests on September 9 at their Budhanilkantha residence, with Deuba sustaining a serious injury to the back of his head that required 12 stitches. Deuba had flown to Singapore for medical treatment, appointing party Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka as Acting President in his absence. Although the interim government had initially placed restrictions on Deuba’s travel, those were lifted after it was confirmed that his trip was for medical purposes.

Four Chinese nationals arrested from Kathmandu’s Sorhakhutte

Four Chinese nationals have been arrested on charges of engaging in suspicious activities while staying in Nepal on business visas. The Immigration Department detained one woman and three men on Friday, said spokesperson Tikaram Dhakal. According to Dhakal, they were taken into custody from Milijuli Chowk, Mhaipi, in Sorhakhutte, Kathmandu—an area commonly known as “Chinese Housing” due to the large number of Chinese nationals residing there. Despite holding business visas, the individuals were unable to provide any information regarding their business activities, company names, or related details.

NCP forms 138-member Central Committee as left alliance accelerates unification process

The Nepali Communist Party (NCP), recently announced by an alliance of 10 left groups on November 5, has formed a 138-member central committee as part of its ongoing party-unification process. The new party, formed by the Maoist Center, Unified Socialist, and 12 other left-leaning groups, finalized the names on Friday, designating Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” as Coordinator and Unified Socialist leader Madhav Kumar Nepal as Co-coordinator. However, despite being the party’s third-ranking leader, Jhalanath Khanal has been kept as a member only. The list also includes several leaders from the Maoist Center and Unified Socialist. At least 40 leaders from the Unified Socialist and more than 70 from the Maoist Center have been accommodated.

Santosh Pariyar quits Rastriya Swatantra Party

The wave of departures from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by Rabi Lamichhane, continues as senior leader Santosh Pariyar resigned from the party on Friday. Pariyar, who served as the Chief Whip of the dissolved House of Representatives and was also a member of the party’s Secretariat, tendered his resignation citing growing internal rifts. RSP spokesperson Manish Jha confirmed Pariyar’s exit. “Santosh Pariyar, who was serving as the party’s Chief Whip in the dissolved House, submitted a resignation letter to the acting president and general secretary,” Jha said. “He informed us that he plans to move ahead with a new political campaign.” Pariyar’s departure comes at a time when several leaders have been distancing themselves from RSP, signaling deepening discontent within the party’s leadership circle.

Pariyar to join Janardan Sharma’s campaign after quitting RSP

Former chief whip of the dissolved House of Representatives, Santosh Pariyar, is set to join the Janardan Sharma-led Pragatisheel Rastriya Abhiyan after resigning from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Pariyar, who was also a member of the RSP Secretariat, left the party citing escalating internal disputes. RSP spokesperson Manish Jha confirmed his resignation, saying Pariyar has informed leaders that he plans to move ahead with a new political initiative.

25 NC leaders demand pre-election general convention

Twenty-five central members of the Nepali Congress’ establishment faction have submitted a memorandum at the party office in Sanepa, urging that the party hold its general convention before the upcoming elections. The memorandum was intended to be submitted to Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka on Friday, but was officially registered at the party office in his absence.

Reinstatement of HoR is Constitutional solution: Speaker Ghimire

Speaker Devraj Ghimire has termed the dissolution of parliament unconstitutional, illegal, and anti-democratic, stating that its immediate restoration is necessary. Speaking to journalists at his private residence in Birtamod, Jhapa, today, Speaker Ghimire said that reinstating parliament is the only legitimate option to address the current political instability in the country. “The dissolution of parliament, carried out beyond the scope of the constitution, has pushed the country toward uncertainty,” he said.

Home Minister Aryal and British Ambassador hold meeting

British Ambassador to Nepal Rob Fenn paid a courtesy call on Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal today. According to the Home Minister’s Secretariat, the two discussed the latest political developments during their meeting at the Ministry. Minister Aryal stated that the government is working to normalize the transitional situation following the Gen-Z protest. Ambassador Fenn assured that the UK would provide necessary support for the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. He added that the friendly relations between the two countries will continue to deepen in the days ahead.

General convention must address changed political reality: UML Senior Vice Chair Pokharel

CPN-UML Senior Vice Chair Ishwor Pokharel has said that, given the rapidly changing political circumstances, the party’s upcoming 11th General Convention should review the revised statute as well as the current political situation. In a statement issued today, Pokharel stressed that the general convention must discuss the developments following the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9. The UML leadership has been reiterating that the upcoming general convention is intended solely for selecting new leadership, as the second statutory general convention was already held.

Gen-Z leader Majid Ansari calls on govt to immediately dismiss Attorney General Sabita Bhandari

Gen-Z movement leader Majid Ansari has called on the government to immediately remove Attorney General Sabita Bhandari, accusing her of abusing her constitutional authority to protect those involved in the illegal extraction and sale of eggs from teenage girls. In a statement issued Friday, Ansari said the Attorney General’s decision not to prosecute those implicated in the Hope Fertility case was a “direct assault on constitutional principles, rule of law and public trust.” “It is deeply alarming that in a country led by a woman Prime Minister, the woman Attorney General herself is involved in a decision that deprives young girls of justice,” he stated.

NC halts central committee meeting, calls executive committee session

The Nepali Congress has paused its ongoing Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting to convene a session of the Executive Committee, party sources said. The meeting was called by Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, who is seeking a resolution to the ongoing dispute over the party’s general convention schedule. Within the party, the establishment faction supports holding the general convention only after the elections on March 5, 2026, while the faction led by Dr. Shekhar Koirala advocates for a convention before the elections, or a special convention if the general convention cannot be held.

Kathmandu Police urges victims to submit documents destroyed during Gen-Z protests

Kathmandu District Police Range has requested all concerned individuals to provide copies of investigation-related documents that were destroyed during the protests of September 8 and 9. According to Police Spokesperson Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, several case files and official documents stored at various police units in the Valley were burned after arson and vandalism occurred during the demonstrations. Police have urged victims and complainants to submit any copies or details of the destroyed documents in their possession. Authorities said the information will help resume and expedite pending investigations.

Prachanda urges completion of unification, clarifies party registration details

Coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has urged all stakeholders to focus on completing the party’s unification process and not be misled by the list submitted to the Election Commission for registration. In a statement issued by his secretariat, Prachanda clarified that the submitted list, provided for party registration purposes, reflected pre-unification central committee members. To meet the legal requirement of one-third female representation, 13 women central members present at the party headquarters were added. The secretariat said this does not represent a separate structure, and the party’s full organizational framework will be finalized in line with its constitution.

Years of Allegations: Dhurmus-Suntali battle corruption claims

Allegations of irregularities against the Dhurmus-Suntali Foundation in the construction of the Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium in Bharatpur have been proven baseless.  The sixth technical evaluation of the project found no wrongdoing, and a previous investigation conducted by the Pulchowk Institute of Engineering had also reached the same conclusion. Artists Sitaram Kattel (Dhurmus) and Kunjana Ghimire (Suntali) established the foundation in 2015. In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that year, the couple even sold their home to support reconstruction efforts. Using their public influence, they mobilized support from both within Nepal and abroad.

Shankar Pokharel questions Kulman Ghising’s decision to stay in office after announcing election bid

CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has questioned the appropriateness of Energy Minister Kulman Ghising remaining in office after announcing his intention to contest the upcoming elections. Pokharel said that Prime Minister Sushila Karki formed a non-party election government, yet a minister from the same government has declared his plan to run in the polls. He argued that such a move contradicts the Prime Minister’s stated commitment to neutrality. He further remarked that it is ethically improper for someone who has already announced an election bid to continue holding a ministerial position. Pokharel added that if Ghising’s decision does not align with the Prime Minister’s commitments, he should be relieved of his duties immediately.

Nepal Airlines flight diverted to Delhi due to insufficient holding fuel

A Nepal Airlines aircraft was diverted to Delhi after it was unable to hold in the air due to insufficient fuel before landing at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The flight, RA 230, had arrived from Dubai and was scheduled to land at TIA at 9:40 a.m. on Friday. According to TIA spokesperson Rinji Sherpa, air traffic congestion prevented the aircraft from landing at the scheduled time. Although the plane was held in the air briefly, fuel levels were insufficient to continue waiting, prompting the diversion to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

Gold price drops by Rs 500 per tola; silver down Rs 60

Gold prices fell by Rs 500 per tola on Friday, a day after surging by Rs 5,900. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association, fine gold was traded at Rs 249,700 per tola, down from Thursday’s price of Rs 250,200. Similarly, silver prices decreased by Rs 60 per tola. The federation has set Friday’s silver rate at Rs 3,285 per tola, compared to Rs 3,345 the previous day.

CAN begins official ticket sales for Nepal Premier League 2

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has officially opened ticket sales for the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The tournament will be held from November 17 to December 13 at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur. Fans can now purchase tickets in different categories at varying prices. According to CAN, general tickets for the opening day and Saturday matches are priced at Rs 500, while premium tickets cost Rs 1,500. For matches held on weekdays, general tickets remain Rs 500, with premium tickets set at Rs 1,000. A special season pass has also been introduced for spectators wishing to attend all matches, priced at Rs 15,000.

World Diabetes Day marked today

World Diabetes Day was observed today in Nepal and across the globe with various awareness programs aimed at highlighting the risks, prevention, and treatment of diabetes. The day was established in 2007 following a United Nations call urging member states to develop national policies suited to their health systems for the prevention and management of diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, 422 million adults worldwide were living with diabetes in 2014, compared to just 10 million in 1980.

AI can drive Nepal toward prosperity: Communications Minister

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel has said that his visit to the Seoul AI Smart City Centre in South Korea has strengthened his commitment to advancing Nepal’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector. After inspecting the facilities operated by the Seoul AI Foundation, Minister Kharel said the experience highlighted how AI can significantly contribute to Nepal’s economic transformation through information technology. The visit, he added, has provided “renewed energy and motivation” for expanding AI-related initiatives in Nepal. The Nepali delegation, led by Minister Kharel, observed the AI City, AI Centre, and several ongoing projects in Seoul. “The knowledge gained from Korea’s AI Smart City Centre will help make Nepal’s newly established AI Centre more robust,” he said.

Three found dead in separate incidents across the country

Three people were discovered dead in separate incidents on Friday in Kathmandu, Sunsari, and Kailali districts. In Kirtipur-6, Kathmandu, 65-year-old Thakur Pandey, originally from Charikot Municipality, Dolakha, was found dead near his rented room. Similarly, in Sunsari’s Ramdhuni-1, 30-year-old Asha Rishidev of Tikula Tole, Itahari-16, was found dead in a paddy field. In another case, an unidentified woman, estimated to be around 45 years old, was found dead inside a shed in Durgauli, Janaki Rural Municipality-1, Kailali.

Finance Ministry establishes focal unit to strengthen coordination with foreign investors

The Ministry of Finance has set up a dedicated focal unit to enhance coordination with foreign investors and international development finance institutions. The unit, created under the Ministry’s International Economic Cooperation Division, will work closely with other ministries and concerned agencies on matters related to foreign investment. According to Ministry spokesperson Tank Prasad Pandey, the Focal Unit will serve as the central coordination point for issues related to banking, taxation, and other procedures directly linked to foreign investors.
