Speaker calls meeting of 10 parties after writ filed in Supreme Court seeking House reinstatement

KATHMANDU:  Speaker of the dissolved House of Representatives Dev Raj Ghimire has called a meeting of 10 political parties to discuss the issue of parliament reinstatement. The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Speaker Ghimire has invited representatives from Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, CPN (Unified Socialist), Janamat Party, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party, and Nagarik Unmukti Party to attend the discussion.

The move follows the filing of 10 separate writ petitions at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, challenging the dissolution of the House and the formation of the interim government.

After the petitions were filed, Speaker Ghimire reportedly intensified his efforts and called the meeting to seek input from the parties on possible next steps. He is also scheduled to consult legal experts on Thursday.

President Ram Chandra Paudel had appointed Sushila Karki, who is not a member of parliament, as Prime Minister on Bhadra 27 (September 12). Immediately after her appointment, Karki recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

Legal professionals have filed writs at the Supreme Court, arguing that both Karki’s appointment and the dissolution of parliament are unconstitutional.

While both Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have opposed the dissolution, they have not filed separate petitions at the court. Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba on Tuesday publicly stated that the House dissolution is unconstitutional.
