54 percent of Congress representatives sign petition demanding special convention

KATHMANDU: A total of 54 percent of Nepali Congress representatives have signed a petition demanding a special general convention, which is set to be submitted to acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka on Wednesday.

Party leaders and members had gathered at the party’s Sanepa headquarters on Tuesday to submit the signatures, but General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma requested them to wait until Wednesday.

The leaders explained that President Sher Bahadur Deuba had already designated Khadka as the acting president during Tuesday’s Central Working Committee meeting and that the signatures would be submitted the next day out of respect for Deuba’s final meeting as party president.

Thapa said that a welcome program would be organized at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the party headquarters before officially handing over the petition to Khadka.

According to party sources, the signatures were collected at the initiative of Thapa and Sharma, who have demanded that a special general convention be held if the regular convention cannot take place within Mangsir (mid-December).

Out of the 4,556 active general convention representatives, 2,487 have signed the petition, equivalent to 54.58 percent. The Congress statute mandates that a special general convention must be called if 40 percent of representatives make such a request.
