Deuba says he won’t step down immediately, vows to hand over leadership after 15th General Convention

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has announced that he will not immediately resign from his post, but will formally transfer party leadership to the new generation through the party’s upcoming 15th General Convention scheduled for the end of the year.

Making his first public appearance since the Gen-Z protests of early September, Deuba addressed party leaders at the Congress central office in Sanepa, delivering a written statement to the Central Working Committee meeting.

In his message, Deuba said the process of leadership change would take place through due procedure during the general convention. “Questions have been raised about the party’s internal life, the upcoming general convention, and leadership transition,” he said. “But just as there is never only one head of a household forever, the party too will not always have the same president.”

Reiterating his earlier commitment to step aside after the convention, Deuba added, “As I have already said, both as per the party’s statute and my personal will, the 15th General Convention will mark the formal transfer of leadership. After that, someone else, not me, will become the president. There is no confusion about it.”
